We've got a rich past that has shaped our present,
and we couldn't be prouder of our heritage.
Let's look back and relive our journey.
We've got a rich past that has shaped our present, and we couldn't be prouder of our heritage. Let's look back and relive our journey.
As a church, we’ve been around for almost 200 years! We’ve changed names, buildings, and pastors along the way. However, when you get to know us, you'll see that one thing has remained constant all these years. We’re still passionate about sharing God’s Word and His love with our neighbors and the community we live in.
Let’s take a step back in time to help you see how God has been faithful to this congregation over the years!
How it all began
Our story began in 1832 when a group of 21 believers started meeting monthly at the home of Mrs. Wentworth. This was in the Mill Village section of Dedham, Massachusetts, where most of the working-class families lived.
In 1843, these enthusiastic founders built a chapel on leased land and established the Second Baptist Church of Christ, with Silas Livermore as the first pastor. (He was paid $200 annually!)
It was these hardworking people who set a strong foundation for us to build upon. They were not only passionate about sharing God’s Word, but also eager to embrace racial equality.
When we became non-denominational
Over the years, this commitment only increased. In fact, it reached a new level in 1994, when we became non-denominational and changed our name to Fellowship Bible Church.
We were amazed at how our church grew in number and diversity because of this. People from different denominational and theological backgrounds were worshiping together.
We also become much more racially diverse, with families from Latino, African, Haitian, and other ethnic backgrounds joining us.
Where we are now
Today, we continue to be a culturally diverse church. Almost 50% of our congregation is from a non-Western/European background. We have worshipers from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and across the U.S. gathering together each week.
Yes, we’re quite a mixed bag, but you’ll find that our diversity is one of the reasons we bond better!
While we’re proud of how far we’ve come, we’re excited about where we’re going. We believe that the current chapter in our story is being written by people like you who have found forgiveness and acceptance in Jesus and are prepared to live for His glory.
So, if you’re praying about a group of people to fellowship with, please remember that our name is Fellowship Bible Church for a reason!
Now that’s a lot about us, but we still know nothing about you. So, head over on Sunday, and we’d love to connect with you in person. Also, if you’re like us and can’t wait to meet new people, click here to plan your visit and help us bring Sunday to you!
